About BreatheIn

My Story: From Anxiety to Understanding

I'm Lua Dias, a biomedical scientist and developer who has lived with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) since I was 17 years old. Like many people with anxiety, I spent years searching for tools that actually work—not just temporary fixes, but real, evidence-based techniques that could help me regain control when my nervous system went into overdrive.

What started as a personal struggle became a deep dive into neuroscience, respiratory physiology, and the intersection of ancient breathing practices with modern science. As a biomedical professional, I couldn't just accept that "breathing helps"—I needed to understand why and how.

The Science Behind the Suffering

Through my biomedical training and years of research, I learned that anxiety isn't just "in your head." It's a real, measurable physiological response involving your autonomic nervous system, vagus nerve, heart rate variability, and stress hormones. Understanding the science didn't cure my anxiety, but it gave me something invaluable: the knowledge to work with my nervous system instead of fighting against it.

I studied everything I could find:

  • Neuroscience research on the vagus nerve and parasympathetic activation
  • Clinical studies on breathing interventions for anxiety disorders
  • Traditional Eastern practices like pranayama and their physiological effects
  • The polyvagal theory and how our nervous system responds to safety cues
  • Heart rate variability research and its connection to stress resilience

The more I learned, the clearer it became: controlled breathing isn't just relaxation folklore. It's one of the few scientifically validated ways we can directly influence our autonomic nervous system in real-time.

Why I Built BreatheIn

After years of managing my own anxiety and understanding the science, I kept coming back to one frustrating reality: when you're having a panic attack or spiraling into anxiety, you can't remember complicated breathing protocols. You need something immediate, simple, and effective.

I built BreatheIn because I needed it myself. As both a biomedical scientist and a developer, I had the unique opportunity to combine evidence-based breathing techniques with accessible technology. Every exercise in BreatheIn is grounded in research—from Stanford's work on the physiological sigh to decades of studies on box breathing and resonance frequency breathing.

But more than that, every feature reflects what actually helps during moments of anxiety:

  • Panic Mode exists because I know what it's like when you need help now
  • The exercises are simple because complex instructions don't work when you're overwhelmed
  • The science is explained because understanding why something works makes it more effective
  • The design is calm because the last thing an anxious person needs is visual chaos

My Approach: Science Meets Experience

BreatheIn is built on three principles:

1. Evidence-Based Techniques

Every breathing exercise included in BreatheIn has scientific research supporting its effectiveness. I don't include techniques just because they're popular—they have to work. Each exercise is backed by peer-reviewed studies from institutions like Stanford University, Harvard Medical School, and leading neuroscience research centers.

2. Practical Application

Academic research is valuable, but it has to translate into something you can actually use when your heart is racing at 2 AM. I've tested every technique during my own anxiety episodes, refined the timing, and designed the interface to work when you're not thinking clearly.

3. Respect for Individual Experience

I'm a biomedical scientist, not a therapist or psychiatrist. I know my limitations. BreatheIn is a tool—one that works for me and many others—but it's not a replacement for professional mental health care. It's a complement, a support, a technique you can use alongside whatever treatment plan works for you.

What I've Learned

Living with GAD for over a decade has taught me that anxiety management isn't about finding one perfect solution. It's about building a toolkit of evidence-based practices that work for you. Breathing exercises have been one of the most reliable tools in my kit, alongside therapy, medication when needed, lifestyle changes, and ongoing learning.

I've learned that:

  • Understanding the neuroscience behind anxiety reduces fear of the symptoms
  • Having immediate tools (like breathing exercises) builds confidence
  • The vagus nerve can be your ally, not your enemy
  • Simple interventions, done consistently, create real change
  • You can be both anxious and capable of managing it

My Qualifications

Academic Background:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences
  • Extensive self-study in neuroscience, particularly autonomic nervous system function
  • Ongoing engagement with current research in anxiety, stress physiology, and respiratory interventions

Technical Skills:

  • Full-stack web developer
  • Experience building health and wellness applications
  • Understanding of user experience design for accessibility

Personal Experience:

  • 10+ years living with and managing Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Hundreds of hours researching breathing techniques, neuroscience, and anxiety management
  • Practical testing of every technique included in BreatheIn

Why Trust BreatheIn?

I'm transparent about what BreatheIn is and isn't:

BreatheIn IS:

  • A collection of evidence-based breathing techniques
  • A tool for immediate anxiety relief
  • Built by someone who understands both the science and the experience
  • Free and accessible to anyone who needs it
  • Based on peer-reviewed research

BreatheIn is NOT:

  • A replacement for therapy or medical treatment
  • A cure for anxiety disorders
  • Medical advice
  • Appropriate for all medical conditions (always consult your doctor)

Every claim I make about breathing techniques is supported by scientific research. I include references and encourage you to read the studies yourself. I believe in informed users who understand what they're doing and why it works.

The Research That Guides Me

I base BreatheIn's exercises on research from:

  • Stanford University's studies on cyclic sighing and physiological stress reduction
  • Leiden University's work on respiratory vagal stimulation
  • Decades of heart rate variability research
  • Clinical trials on breathing interventions for anxiety disorders
  • Neuroscience research on the vagus nerve and parasympathetic activation

I continuously update my understanding as new research emerges. Science evolves, and so should our tools.

My Mission

BreatheIn exists to make evidence-based anxiety management tools accessible to everyone. I want people who are struggling—like I was at 17—to have immediate access to techniques that actually work, backed by science, explained clearly, and available when they need them most.

If BreatheIn helps even one person feel less powerless during a panic attack, or gives someone the confidence to try breathing exercises because they understand the science, then I've achieved what I set out to do.
